In baseball, pitching and defense can go a long way toward winning championships, and both were on display Wednesday night at The Orchard in State Fair Park, as the Yakima Valley Pippins shut out the Walla Walla Sweets, 2-0, in an exhibition game.

Mitch Skaggs provided the only runs in the game, delivering a two-out, two-run single to right field in the fifth inning. The Pippins had some other scoring opportunities but weren’t able to break through against Sweets pitching.

The Pippins used eight pitchers in Wednesday’s contest and none of them allowed more than one baserunner in an inning. Wyatt Mills worked two innings and struck out five Sweets. In total, the Pippins held Walla Walla to just four hits in Wednesday’s exhibition.

With the exhibition complete, the focus now shifts to the regular season. Opening Night, presented by Country Financial, is Friday at 7:05 p.m. vs. the Klamath Falls Gems. Josh Nashed is scheduled to start for the Pippins opposite Carter Buuck for the Gems.

Tune in at 6:55 p.m. on 1460 ESPN Yakima.
