When Russell Wilson takes the field for on September 9th in Arizona, he won’t be the only rookie to start a season at quarterback for the Seahawks.  Who were the others?

Rookie Russell Wilson won coach Pete Carroll’s training camp competition, earning the starting job over incumbent Tavaris Jackson and free agent acquisition Matt Flynn. Wilson’s emergence made Jackson expendable, and he was traded to the Buffalo Bills. Flynn will be the backup, and second year man Josh Portis will be the third stringer.

How many other rookie quarterbacks have started the season for the Seahawks?

Jim Zorn was the 1976 expansion Seahawks starter, having been claimed on waivers from the Dallas Cowboys. He won the job in training camp over veteran Bill Munson, and remained the starter midway through the 1983 season. He is now the quarterbacks coach for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Rick Mirer was selected with the second overall pick in the 1993 draft by the Seattle Seahawks out of Notre Dame . He signed a five year, $15 million contract. In his rookie year under head coach Tom Flores, he set all time NFL rookie records for attempts, completions & yards, and became only the 3rd rookie quarterback since 1970 to start all of his team’s games. He finished his rookie season 5th in the AFC with 274 completions and 2833 yards. Mirer was traded to the Chicago Bears in 1997. He now operates a Napa Valley, California winery.

The Seahawks take on the Raiders Thursday at 5pm, on AM 1280 and FM 99.3 Newstalk KIT.
