A woman riding an ATV was killed Wednesday when her 4x4 was struck by a farm truck. Deputies from the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office were called to the 5700 block of Bethany Road near Sunnyside at about 3:10PM.

DEPUTIES SAY THE FARM TRUCK TRIED TO AVOID THE CRASH

When they arrived they found 86-year-old JoAnne Kilian of Sunnyside injured. They say Kilian, who was riding a Honda four-wheel ATV pulled out from a driveway in front of a large farm truck that was traveling south. Deputies say the 64-year-old driver, identified as Jesus Frausto also of Sunnyside tried to avoid hitting the ATV by swerving to the left and into a ditch, but the front bumper of the truck struck the rear of the ATV, pushing the ATV forward. The ATV and the operator ended up in the opposite ditch. The farm truck rolled onto its side in the roadway. But the rider of the ATV suffered major injuries. Kilian broke her legs and had internal injuries. She was taken to a Sunnyside hospital where she died shortly after arrival. Sheriff’s officials say there were “no indications of intoxicants being involved or speed.” They say the operator of the ATV failed to yield the right of way to the farm truck resulting in the crash. No charges are expected to be filed against the driver of the farm truck.
The investigation continues.
