Valley Teams Split In Early Girls Basketball Tourney Action
WIAA's Hardwood Classic tipped-off at 9:00 this morning at Spokane's Veteran's Memorial Arena, the Tacoma Dome and here at the Yakima Valley SunDome and the results thus far are mixed.
The #6 seeded White Swan Cougars girls team was upended in a loser-out contest this morning in a class 2B game in Spokane by Tri-Cities Prep, 77-63.
Closer to home in the SunDome, the #13 East Valley Red Devils throttled much higher seeded Port Angeles (#4) 53-26 in a 2A girls bout. The Red Devils took a massive 20-2 lead after one quarter and cruised to victory, holding the coastal school to a mere 8 points in the entire first half.
Ashlynn Sylve led all scorers with 17 points and four rebounds. Delana Bivins kicked in with 10 points of her own on 5-7 shooting from the field. For the game, East Valley shot 50% from behind the three-point arc going 4 for 8 and nearly as well inside, shooting at a 47.6% clip.
The win sets up an all-valley showdown tomorrow afternoon, again tipping at 12:15 p.m., against the #6 Wapato Wolves.
Later tonight, 1460 ESPN Yakima will be broadcasting live from the Tacoma Dome as the Davis Pirates take on the Curtis Vikings. Tipoff at 7:15 p.m. Jon Jensen has the play-by-play.
