Some Washington Residents Are Giving Back, and Showing Love to a Tacoma Hometown Olympic Legend

You know it’s getting mad expensive to live out here in Washington when you find out that there’s a gold medal Olympic champion living in a men's’ shelter. He can’t afford to live anywhere else. It’s not from lack of trying either. When he previously lived in Tacoma, rents back then were reasonable. He moved back to Washington last year and was stupefied by the cost of rent for a 1 bedroom apartment in Tacoma. It was at least $1,400 a month.

King 5 News did a story about the legendary champ, ‘Sugar’ Ray Seales. His family migrated to the mainland from the U.S. Virgin Islands when he was a pre-teen and he grew up in Tacoma. He won a gold medal in boxing in 1972 at the Munich, Germany Summer Olympics. He spent his young adult life being a teacher in Tacoma for kids with autism at Lincoln High.

Lionel Donovan at King 5 News reports that Mr. Seales currently lives in the Shiloh Baptist Church in Tacoma, living and volunteering in the Mens’ Ministry until he can afford a local Tacoma place to rent on his own.
