PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Rookie Sophia Smith left Stanford early to go pro and scored in her debut with the Portland Thorns. The top draft pick in the National Women's Soccer League has been building toward this moment since choosing soccer over basketball in high school. She won a national championship with the Cardinal last fall, then took part in two U.S. national team camps before getting drafted. Smith is now set on making a splash in the NWSL.
