WENATCHEE -- The Yakima Valley Pippins pounded out 10 hits while striking out 14 Friday night, defeating the Wenatchee AppleSox, 6-1, on opening night in the West Coast League. The Pippins improve to 3-0 all-time in opening nights.

Zach Draper (College of Idaho) earned the win, pitching five shutout innings for the Pippins, striking out seven while allowing just two hits.

Nick Sablock (Cal State Northridge) pitched two scoreless innings of relief. Yakima native Jens Jensen (Central Washington) allowed one run, while Grant Ford (Nevada) and Zach Haggett(Central Washington University) combined to close out the final frame.

The Pippins bunched their scoring into two major innings, as Jay Schuyler (San Diego) drove in the first run of the season with an RBI single in the third inning. Two more runs would eventually score that frame as Mitchell Morimoto (Arizona) delivered one of his two hits on the evening, an RBI single into left field.

While the offense did strand 12 men on base, the bats came alive for run support in the seventh inning. Following a line-drive double play, the Pippins strung together a three-run rally beginning with an RBI single by Ryan Garcia (UCLA), who was one of eight players to notch a base hit Friday night.
