For a spring that, by and large, went as good or better than expected for the Seattle Mariners, the club received the first real bad news a day before breaking camp in Peoria, AZ before opening the 2017 season in Houston on Monday.

Mariners #4 starter Drew Smyly, whom the team picked up in an offseason trade with the Tampa Bay Rays, will start the season on the Disabled List with a strained elbow in his pitching arm and will miss six to eight weeks.

Smyly pitched for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic and missed much of the Mariners camp.
