Mariners Top Reds in 8 in Windy Downpour
The Seattle Mariners lifted their Cactus League record to 3-4-5(!) with a comeback 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on a rainy, windy game that was ended after eight innings at the Peoria Sports Complex in Arizona.
Trailing 3-0 after giving up single runs in the top of the second, third and fourth innings, the Mariners, who could only muster three base hits in the contest, rallied for a run in the bottom of the fifth, two in the sixth and the game-winning RBI in the seventh.
Non-roster invitee and right fielder Eric Filia smoked a single through the 5.5 hole to score phenom Julio Rodriguez to give the M's their first lead -- a lead that they would hang on to before the game was called after eight due to windy and rainy weather.
Nick Margevicius and Justin Dunn, both battling for the sixth spot in Seattle's starting pitching rotation each three three innings respectively to open the game. Both got no-decisions. Erik Swanson pitched pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up the victory, his first win of the spring. Gerson Bautista hurled a scoreless frame in the eighth to lock down his first save of the 2021 Cactus League schedule. Catcher Tom Murphy and second baseman Donovan Walton were the only other Mariners batters to record a safety in the contest.
Seattle will play the visitors to the Colorado Rockies on Saturday (March 13) with a 12:10 p.m. first pitch.
