Japan's Takuma Sato held off three-time champ Helio Castroneves after re-taking the lead with less than 10 laps to go to visit the winner's circle for his first time at the 101st running of the Indy 500.

Sato became the 71st different winner of the "greatest spectacle in sport" held annualy at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Pole-sitter Scott Dixon was involved in the day's most spectacular crash on lap 53 but was uninjured.
