Even though it's cold and even though you own these items in your own house, you can't use them during Stage 1 and Stage 2 bans.

If we're in a Stage 1 burn ban, it means they're not trying to add more particles of smoke into the air.

A few things that are illegal to use during a Stage 1 burn ban:

  • Fireplace
  • Outdoor fire pits
  • wood stoves (uncertified)
  • Non EPA-certified fireplace inserts
  • You may, however, use EPA-certified wood stoves and pellet stoves if you have no other heating options.

Now, if we're in an emergency-level Stage 2 burn ban, even more are not allowed.

Here what is illegal to use during a Stage 2 burn ban:

  • All fireplaces
  • All wood stoves
  • All pellet stoves
  • All outdoor burning of any type
  • Any wood-burning device, including EPA-certified devices
  • Again, if there are no other heating devices in your place and it would be unsafe without heat, that's the exception to the rule.

Electric heaters, propane fireplaces, and natural gas fireplaces are still fine.
