I was shocked when I found out which 3 Pacific Northwest cities had the highest homeless population. Then, when the focus narrowed to Eugene, Oregon, I was extremely sad. It is a beautiful place filled with great people, and it's getting (metaphorically) run down and beaten up by society.

According to World Population Review, Eugene ranks as the 151st biggest city in population (175,685 according to the 2023 census), so with that many people, it is not surprising that a homeless problem would be high, which can lead to an increase in crime. Plus, the University of Oregon is also located in Eugene, a great school with amazing students and staff, but there are negative aspects that being the home to a major university, CAN add to the issue.

Not just in Eugene, but really anywhere. When possible, travel with a group of people, carry protection, and most importantly, pay attention to your surroundings and know the neighborhood. It might seem like common sense, but common sense is hardly common. As far as finding friends/group of people, well with Eugene being the home of the ducks, it shouldn't be hard to find a group to travel with!

I dislike being all doom and gloom. I try my best to be optimistic in life, and with all things, there are positives. Just because these are higher crime neighborhoods doesn't mean everyone in these areas is up to no good. Many great people live there and are trying their best every day. Many factors can go into why crime is so high in these locations. Economic, gangs, mental illness, etc. Hopefully, things can improve, but only time will tell.
