The Yakima-Tieton Irrigation District’s Main Canal is facing a critical threat following the devastating Retreat Fire of 2024 and severe flooding that swept through the state in December of last year. The combined damage has brought the canal to a dangerous state, with officials warning of an imminent failure that could have severe impacts for the region.

LAWMAKERS WANT A FIX ASAP

In response, Rep. Dan Newhouse, along with other federal lawmakers, has sent a formal letter to the Bureau of Reclamation, urging the agency to immediately designate the situation as a state of emergency. The lawmakers say "the canal is, and remains, in a state of emergency," underscoring the critical need for fast intervention.

IN DIRE NEED OF A REHAB FUNDING

A recent news release from the lawmakers highlighted the circumstances, describing the situation as "dire and requiring immediate attention and intervention." District officials are hopeful that the Department of the Interior and the Bureau of Reclamation will partner with the Yakima-Tieton Irrigation District to help reduce the risk of "imminent harm to public health and safety and economic viability" for residents and farmers in the Yakima Basin.

IT COULD JUST BE A MATTER OF TIME

If the Bureau of Reclamation designates the canal’s condition as an emergency, it will have 30 days to allocate emergency funding for repairs and reconstruction. This funding is vital to prevent major failure of the 12-mile Yakima-Tieton Canal, which irrigates about 28,000 acres of prime agricultural land in the Yakima Valley.

VITAL FOR OUR YAKIMA VALLEY

The canal’s integrity is important not only for the region’s agriculture but also for the economic stability of the entire valley. The lawmakers’ call for urgent action aims to safeguard the water infrastructure that sustains the Yakima Basin’s vibrant farming community.
