Yakima Community Comes Together for Cleanup Day

Over 100 volunteers from around the community participated in the Barge-Lincoln Community Cleanup Day this past Saturday in Yakima.

Staff from the OIC of Washington along with volunteers from area nonprofits including Rotary Club of Yakima, Yakima County NAACP (including myself and my daughter), Asian Pacific Islander Coalition, and children from Yakima County NAACP Youth Council showed up to pass out complimentary coffee, doughnuts, and lunch to each of the cleanup volunteers.

The volunteers helped clean off roads, tree debris, and random street trash along roadways in the Barge-Lincoln Elementary School neighborhood near Buwalda Lane and East I Street. Other residents of the Southeast Yakima neighborhoods located between East Yakima Ave through East R Street, including the area near the Old Mill site were also encouraged to drop off or leave out their unwanted yard debris and property debris for the volunteers to haul off to the town dump.

The City of Yakima Public Works Department was involved in this collaboration with OIC of Washington and other groups including Poor Boys Auto Wrecking, Yakima County, Yakima Waste Systems, The Heights Church, Safe Yakima and Champions Centre.
