Eagles Hire Pederson as New Coach and Bring Back Memories of Another Coach
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Eagles have hired Doug Pederson to be their coach.
Pederson was Kansas City's offensive coordinator the past three seasons.
Pederson accepted the offer to become Philadelphia's coach last week. The team had to wait for the Chiefs to be eliminated from the playoffs before making it official.
Pederson started nine games as quarterback for the Eagles in 1999. He replaces Chip Kelly, who was fired one game before completing his third season.
The Eagles interviewed six candidates, including two-time Super Bowl champion Tom Coughlin.
Shula recalls Pederson's role in milestone Miami victory
MIAMI (AP) — The hiring of Doug Pederson as the Philadelphia Eagles' coach is stirring fond memories for Don Shula.
Pederson was a third-string rookie quarterback when he came off the bench to help Shula and the Dolphins beat the Eagles 19-14 in November 1993. The win was Shula's 325th, breaking George Halas' NFL record for coaching victories.
When Dan Marino was sidelined for the season in October by a torn Achilles tendon, Shula couldn't remember the name of his third quarterback until someone reminded him. It was Pederson, a former member of the practice squad.
And when backup quarterback Scott Mitchell separated his shoulder early in the second half at Philadelphia, Pederson entered the game. He directed two late field goal drives and the Dolphins rallied to win.
