PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Anthony Manning's header off a free kick from Michael Nanchoff gave Portland the go-ahead goal in the first half and the Timbers 2 held on to defeat Newcastle United 4-3 in an exhibition on Tuesday night.

Rolando Aarons scored two goals in the span of about a minute late in the second half, but Newcastle could not catch up after falling behind 4-1.

The Timbers 2, who are in the midst of the USL season, are the reserve squad of Major League Soccer's Portland Timbers.

The match at Providence Park was the third American exhibition for English Premier League's Magpies under new coach Steve McClaren, former manager of the English national team. Newcastle defeated Sacramento Republic 1-0 on Saturday.
