Seahawks Cut QB Josh Portis After DUI Arrest

Yesterday, it was revealed that Seahawks backup quarterback Josh Portis had been arrrested for a DUI on May 5. Today, the team released him.

Portis spent most of last season on the Seahawks practice squad, and had signed with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. The Seahawks resigned him when Matt Flynn was traded to the Raiders in March, leaving starter Russell Wilson as the only quarterback on the roster. The team then added Brady Quinn and Jerrod Johnson to compete for the backup slot.

Portis was stopped on the I-90 floating bridge on May 5 for doing 80 mph in a 60 mph zone.

The Seattle PI reported yesterday:

When the trooper stepped up to Portis’ window, according to the report, there was “a strong odor of intoxicants coming from the vehicle” and Portis had “watery bloodshot eyes.”

Portis said he hadn’t been drinking, but the trooper asked him to step out of the car. A person in the passenger’s seat “stated Portis was a Seahawk player, and he did not have to get out of the car,” the trooper wrote in the incident report.
