Playing in front of a charged-up home crowd, the Boston Red Soxblitzed St. Louis in the opening game of the World Series last night, 8-1. David Ortiz and Mike Napoli each drove in three runs for the American League champs, who got 7 2/3 innings of great pitching from Jon Lester. He allowed the National League champs just five hits in the loss. Losing pitcher Adam Wainwright was lifted after five innings, charged with three earned runs and six hits.

Game 2 in the best-of-seven series is tonight at Fenway with John Lackey slated to go for Boston against Michael Wacha.

The series will then shift to St. Louis for Game 3 on Saturday and Game 4 Sunday.
