Mariners Sign Catcher Kelly Shoppach
ESPN is reporting that the Seattle Mariners have agreed to a one year, $1.5 million dollar contract with free agent catcher Kelly Shoppach.
The 32 year-old backstop will reunite Seattle manager Eric Wedge, whom he played under in Cleveland from 2006-09.
Shoppach shores up the thin catching position for Seattle who earlier this winter sent backup John Jaso to Oakland in a three team deal that harvested outfielder Mike Morse from the Washington Nationals.
Jesus Montero will likely be the M's everyday catcher while minor league prospect Mike Zunino gets more seasoning.
