SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners have designated for assignment backup outfielder Justin Ruggiano to clear a roster spot for the addition of reserve catcher Jesus Sucre from Triple-A Tacoma.

The Marines made the roster moves Thursday. Seattle was limited on options for clearing a roster spot, leaving Ruggiano, Rickie Weeks or Willie Bloomquist as likely candidates to be designated.

Ruggiano, 33, appeared in 36 games and hit .214 with two home runs. He was acquired from the Chicago Cubs last December in exchange for left-hander Matt Brazis.

Seattle was forced to make the move of recalling Sucre after trading away backup catcher Welington Castillo as part of the six-player deal that brought Mark Trumbo to Seattle from Arizona on Wednesday. Sucre has appeared in six games with the Mariners this season but is just 1 for 15 at the plate.
