Mariners agree to $4.15M, 1-year deal with Leonys Martin

SEATTLE (AP) — The Mariners and outfielder Leonys Martin have agreed to a $4.15 million contract for the 2016 season and avoided salary arbitration.

Seattle announced the agreement Thursday.

Left-handed pitcher Charlie Furbush and right-hander Evan Scribner also filed for arbitration. Players and teams are scheduled to swap proposed salaries on Friday.

Martin was acquired from Texas during Seattle's busy offseason makeover with the idea that he will be in a rotation among the Mariners' starting outfielders. Martin is coming off a down year at the plate with Texas, where he hit .219 with 12 doubles, five home runs and 25 RBIs in 95 games last season.

Martin signed a $15.5 million, five-year contract with the Rangers in May 2011 that included a $5 million signing bonus. It was one of the largest contracts for a Cuban defector at the time, before deals for players like Jose Abreu and Yoenis Cespedes.
