Legendary Husky Basketball Player Bob Houbregs Dies at 82
Legendary Husky basketball player Bob Houbregs, who led the team to its only Final Four appearance in 1953, has died at the age of 82 according to a UW spokesperson.
Houbregs attended UW from 1949 to 1953 and was an All-American in each or his last two years with the Huskies. His senior season, Houbregs was named the NCAA Player of the Year and was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 34.8 points-per-game in the tournament.
After his career at UW, Houbregs was selected No. 2 overall by the Milwaukee Hawks in the 1953 NBA Draft and played with four teams in his five-year career averaging 9.3 points-per-game. Following his playing career, Houbregs spent four years at the general manager of the Seattle SuperSonics.
Houbregs No. 25 jersey is just one of two retired-numbers hanging from the rafters in Alaska Airlines Arena.
