With MLB's Opening Day coming up Thursday, hope springs eternal for baseball fans across America. While every team and their fanbase go in to each season with the ultimate goal of winning the World Series, that, frankly, just isn't realistic in many cases.

ESPN.com writer Sam Miller has distilled the criteria as to what would make for a "successful" 2018 campaign for the Seattle Mariners whom currently hold the distinction of being pro sports longest-running sad sacks by virtue of failing to make the postseason for 17 straight years.
