The Yakima Bears lost 7-4 to the Tri-City Dust Devils Tuesday night at Yakima County Stadium. The Dust Devils snapped a four-game losing streak with the road win, while the Bears have now lost three-consecutive games.

The Dust Devils made Bears starting pitcher Austin Platt’s Northwest League debut a short one. Platt gave up five earned runs on five hits and two walks in one and two third innings pitched while taking the loss. Tri-City score one run in the first inning on two hits, but broke the game open early with a four-run second inning. After a single and a pair of walks loaded the bases in the second,  a two-run single from Rosell Herrera and a two-run triple from Tom Murphy gave the Dust Devils a 5-0 lead.

The Bears put up an unearned run in bottom of the second, thanks to a ball thrown away by the Tri-City shortstop. The middle of the game was quiet on the scoring front. The Dust Devils added a run in the eighth inning and another in the ninth, before the Bears started a rally in the ninth inning. Danny Poma reached on a lead-off walk in the bottom of the ninth inning and Ronnie Freeman doubled to set the table for a two-run double by Michael Lang, who scored on a Kevin Medrano single. Those three runs were the end of the scoring. The Bears had two runners on at the end of the game, as a fielder’s choice groundball from Wagner Mateo finished the night.

Behind Platt, the Bears got great outings from the bullpen. Blake Forslund started by stranding an inherited runner and finished with two and a third scoreless innings. Jose Jose then allowed no hits or walks in three shutout innings, his longest outing of the season. Victor Acosta pitched the final two frames, giving up one earned and one unearned run on two hits.

The Bears were outhit 8-7, with the two teams combining for five doubles. While three batters had seven of the eight Dust Devils hits, Kevin Medrano’s 2-for-4 performance was the only multi-hit game for the Bears. Michael Lang had two RBIs and Danny Poma scored two runs. The Bears hitters combined for seven walks, two each from Shaun Cooper and Danny Poma.

The Bears are now 3-4 in the second half. Game two of the three-game series between the Bears and Dust Devils at Yakima County Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 Wednesday. Right-handed pitchers Blake Perry of the Bears and Ben Hughes of the Dust Devils are the probable starters.
