EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Varsity athletes in a west Eugene school district will sport all Nike apparel for games under a unanimously approved exclusive agreement.

The Register-Guard reports Bethel School Board members voted Monday to put varsity players completely in Nike during games in exchange for $15,000 in rebates for five years.

The rebates will be used to purchase Nike uniforms and equipment at Willamette High School.

Teams wearing other apparel brands have three years to comply with the agreement, which runs through July 2020.

A parent was concerned about students being forced to promote Nike, and a University of Oregon graduate student previously spoke to the board about the pervasive nature of apparel companies in academia.

Bethel district spokesman Pat McGillivray said the district did what was best for students, not Nike.
