Former University of North Carolina basketball coach Dean Smith died Saturday at the age of 83. But Smith leaves behind more than just 879 wins (fourth most in Division I history), and the honor of coaching Michael Jordan.

He was part of the history of the game of basketball. A University of Kansas graduate, Smith played under Phog Allen, whose own coach was basketball's inventor, James Naismith.

Smith's legacy is still felt widely today among the coaches who served under him while he roamed the sidelines in Chapel Hill, N.C., as well as the ones who are indirectly part of his coaching tree. Here are a few notable ones.
